Cedar
shingles are very popular, but homeowners often struggle with
how to maintain them best. Should you let them gray out or
attempt to keep the natural wood tone?
Regardless
of aesthetic value, shingles are very water absorbent and
must be protected or they will deteriorate quickly. Depending
on the look you want, our Timber Pro UV formulas will protect
and maintain your shingles.
If
you want to maintain the natural color, try our Wood
Pro UV in a semi-transparent wood tone such as Oregon
Cedar, Honey, or Natural. If you wish for them to weather
naturally, you should choose Wood
Pro UV in the Clear UV formula or try our Everwood
preservative. However, keep in mind that siding will never
gray evenly because some areas are more protected than others.
If you like the gray look, consider either our Slate Gray
or Weathered Gray semi-transparent stains. They are still
quite transparent, but help even out the graying process.
Finally, when using a semi-transparent stain, we always recommend
a final topcoat of Clear UV to lock in the color. If you keep
your shingles protected with Timber Pro UV, they will lay
flat and last for years to come.
